Compared to heterosexual women, lesbian/gay and bisexual women report higher rates of physical health problems. The Pittsburgh Girls Study (PGS) substudy titled Health, Emotions, and Adaptation over Time (HEArT) investigates health disparities using vigorous objective biomarkers of health in young adulthood. For example, biomarkers consist of examining cardiometabolic function and measures of systemic inflammation. This study then links information on stress exposure collected across childhood and adolescence and reactivity to a laboratory stressor to early adult health to have a better understanding on the role stress plays in association with sexual minority status and health. Participants in the HEArT study are a substudy of PGS participants who identify as heterosexual or lesbian/gay or bisexual.
